This site is designed as an informative and educational overview to help you develop your ideas for going into business online. Ideas that you can then translate into a business plan.

It will provide you with basic concepts and terminology, giving you the background you need to understand more specialized topics when you encounter them.

These pages will introduce you to the general concepts of starting a business online and will introduce some of the special considerations of doing business on the internet.

Thinking Of Starting A Small Business Online?

You'll need some solid basic information and a framework to help you navigate the confusing world of internet business.

Starting with solid basic information, and an overview, you'll be able to:

  • sort through the hype.
  • decide if the internet is right for your small business.
  • spark your ideas of how you might bring your small business onto the internet.
  • develop the ideas you need for a formal business plan.
  • identify what you might need for your internet business.
  • evaluate offers for products, services, and information. (Is it relevant? Is it what you need for your business?)

With a good introduction to doing business online, you'll bring your business online faster, with less frustration, and make fewer mistakes. You'll even have more energy for inspiration!

The problem with much of the information about starting a small business on the internet...

is that the way it is presented does more to overwhelm and confuse than to clarify. Larger sites lay out lots of links and a ton of information but no real guideposts on where to start, leaving you to guess where to start, wondering where it all fits together. Smaller specialized sites don't establish the context and background you need for understanding how that specialized information fits in. Other smaller sites, of course, have the purpose of convincing you that their information or product is what you need. Predictably, many don't spend a lot of time explaining how their product fits into the bigger picture.

What is difficult to find is a simple overview that can help you to make sense of the information overload that you will encounter. And that's what this site is designed to be.

How to use this site to help you start a small business online

You will get the most out of this site if you start at the beginning. Think of it as a classroom. (That's really the model that this site is following.)

This site is set up to lead you from general introductions of basic, important concepts to increasingly specific sub-topics. The sub-topic pages assume that you have read the more general introductory pages.

Introductory pages are shown on the left side navigation bar, and on the page list at the bottom of the home page. Those introductory pages link to sub-topics.

If you want to go more in-depth on a topic, many pages provide Further Reading suggestions.

You can, of course, go through this site in any order you want. There are also numerous links between pages to connect specific topics.

This site does not replace the many reliable resources available on the web to help you start an OFF-line business, or to help you write up a conventional business plan.

Webbizworkbook.com is designed to supplement those resources with basic information specific to online small businesses.

If you need to create a formal business plan for your internet business, this site will help you to formulate the ideas that you will put into that plan.

All the best to you in your online adventures,

Wendy Maki.
